More pictures

Morgan Sue with her new Do, Thanks Auntie Buffie. It's what she wanted for Christmas. Johnathen FINALLY got to ride his new bike. It was so cold he only lasted 10 mins. He thought his bike was too big. He was a bit intimidated at first, but he raced up and down the street.
Neleh on her new bike. She loves her Hello Kitty helmet. She is almost three and can barely reach the pedals. She can really get going though!
Oh Neleh you are so funny. She is trying to squish this NERDS box. Look at that crazy hair! And she is wearing her Christmas dress, I didn't get it put away yet.

Snow day and Christmas

Morgan was "pleased" with her BOX. It is her hope chest. Thom calls it her "get the crap out" box. It is tradition in my family to get a hope chest the Christmas after you turn 16. Then you get items for your future home. Neleh DIVES into the candy. She is shoving NERDS in her mouth.

Christmas Chaos at the Quists! Thom and mini Thom- I mean Johnathen. They hand out the presents.
Severin happy with candy. The hat says "Babys First Christmas" it matches Dads and Johnathens. BUT his head was too big (fat Quist noggin) so I cut a slit up the back, still not enough room, so I put an elastic in to hold it on his head. It fits perfectly inbetween chin 1 and chin 2. I'll get him an adult size for next year.
This was our trees after the storm on the 21st, I did hope one would fall down it is the only way Thom is going to let me get rid of it.
This is more to show the depth of the snow, not Thom with the snowblower. Anyone who knows us, knows I do the snow blowing.

Another Miracle

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. We all got everything we wanted, even diarrhea. Lucky I know. Earlier this week Thom got a call from the Infectious Disease Team at Primary Childrens, informing us that Severin was exposed to Whooping cough while in the hospital. Seriously, staph and then whooping cough, can anyone say germ warfare? I could not imagine him coughing, he cries when he sneezes. They said incubation is 3 weeks he was exposed on the 3 rd, so if he still was not coughing by Christmas he would be ok. So far so good, not even the diarrhea. I am so grateful for the Lords hand in my sons health. His OT came to see him on Weds. He is doing really good. We both think as soon as he can tolerate being on his tummy he is going to take off. He has lots of new toys to play with and encourage rolling. He is on 1/16 liter of oxygen. He has been doing well on that amount. I tried to turn him down last night but he couldn't maintain. Thats ok, its not a race. His heart will heal and his body will grow and not need extra O2. When he is tired he rubs it off and I let him be for a bit. He has started nursing at night again, YEA! I didn't properly appreciate nursing until I couldn't do it. He still needs high calorie the majority of the time, so it is fortified bottles during the day. But not having to get up and warm a bottle 3 times a night is great! He "talks" and blows bubbles. He chews on his hands, maybe teeth? The heart thing over shadows everything else, I forget about the "normal" baby stuff. He has an appointment with his Pediatrician on Jan. 3 for more Synergist, 6 month well baby visit, and 4 month immunizations- we are a bit behind. We wish you all a safe and blessed Hoilday Season, Loves!

Neleh and Johnathen conversation

We are driving along and Neleh and Johnathen are chatting it up in the back. Johnathen starts to talk about The Beatles, he is a huge fan. So he was asking about who was still alive, their songs, things like that. Then he says "I want to be a Beatle" Neleh chimes in with "Ona be a butterfly". Oh she makes me laugh! It is brief times like this that make it all worth it!!!

Oxygen and the New "Normal"

So after having Severin totally off O2, and seeing him turn really blue when he cries, I reworked the plan. He was on 1/4 liter. He obviously can not do cold turkey. I decided to slowly wean him down. He is now on an 1/8 liter. His sats are hanging around 77-83%. When he starts hitting high 80s low 90s then I will decrease him to 1/16 then 1/32. By that time he should be able to do room air. His body is still healing. In my gut I just can't have him be that blue if I can prevent it with a little O2. AND he started coughing on our way home from Primarys. Its not too bad. I just pray Synergist really works! He is getting back to his happy self. Today he even giggled when we were snuggling. It is so good to see him coming back around. This is again our NEW normal.

Surgeon follow up 12-15-10

No more oxygen!!! Well at least not all the time.
I know this is the goal we wanted. That is all good, fine and dandy, BUT I am freaking out. I woke up this morning to his alarms going off because he was Sating 68 %, his O2 was blowing in his eyes. I don't know how a few hours drive can make him ok to not need it anymore. The Cardio was the same that saw him after the last surgery too, and wanted him off O2 then. We all know how that went. Thom wants him to be "normal" but he is not normal. His sats drop when he cries. And he gets really blue/purple. They said he can have O2 at night or whenever I SEE he is more blue then usual. I'm so afraid I am going to miss a warning sign. It is just going to take me some time to get comfortable. I still have the pulse/ox so I can do spot checks on him. Yesterday was a turning point for the kid. He cried only when he was hungry-don't we all. He didn't act like he was in pain. His appetite is back. He gained 4 oz in a week. He now weighs 13.6, he lost over a pound after surgery. He doesn't want to nurse at all. I think it is ok because he probably needs the extra calories. I'll keep trying and maybe that will come back too. It just makes for exhausting night time feedings. He doesn't like to wait for the bottle to warm but he doesn't like it cold either. I tell him the solution is to nurse, its quick and warm but he just doesn't get it. Silly boy.

Hanging out for the echo. He watched the screen like he knew it was his heart he was looking at. His heart is not functioning at 100% but it did improve since the last echo. He will stay on blood pressure medication. Not lovin the EKG. Those stickers really stick! He is still dealing with the Post Traumatic Stress of the hospital stay.
Hanging out with Dad waiting for Bonnie and the Cardio. Look at that "nutrition" as Dr. Kaza calls it

Update on the first week back home

Severin is doing better everyday. He and Neleh are in a competition to see who can throw the most fits in a day. So far Neleh is winning. He came home on 1/4 liter of oxygen. He went into surgery on 3/4 ,so improvement already. He sweats like crazy when he eats, screams and sleeps. So pretty much all the time. He has a follow up appointment on Wednesday. They will do an echo again to check the "decreased function" in his heart. They expect it to heal itself and return to full function. It was mild and from what I have been told it is in his ventrical septum- which he doesn't have so I'm a bit confused. One thing you do NOT say to a heart mom is "decreased heart function" it makes us think bad thoughts. He is on blood pressure medication, lasix, asprin and tylenol. Not bad for what he has been through. He would love to be on my lap facing forward with me patting his belly, always. Unfortunately life doesn't always afford us those luxuries, but I do it as much as possiable. I will love to have a rountine again.

Home again, home again jiggity-jig!

By HOME I mean not at Primary Childrens, drop off perscriptions at the pharmacy, take Johnathen to school, go to the Peditrician for Synergist shot(for RSV), take a nap, get Johnathen, pick up perscriptions, have FHE in the form of decorating for Christmas. Severin was alittle freaked out when the kids were yelling he was home but then he realized it was just his peeps and calmed right down. He sat in the recliner with Johnathen and watched cartoons. He was so excited when I put him in his bed to nap. He just smiled and looked around like the lost was now found. Oh the joy of having all the chicks in the nest!!!

Almost done with IV antibiotics

Severin finishes his last dose of antibiotics at 4am on Sunday. Then they will monitor him for more fevers or seeming to be sick. Thom went and hung out with him today. I took the kids to two family Christmas parties. My parents came to stay the weekend with us and the kids have loved every minute. Severin will get their undivided attention tomorrow. Thank you for your prayers!

A good day

Ok my kid is damn cute! When I came in today his was laying in his bed looking around. When he saw me he smiled all over. Then we hooked him up with a Bumbo seat (yes it is purple but whatever, he had pink blankets today too) and a bunch of toys. He was happy. He sat there and played for 45 mins. I was so glad to see him comming back around to acting like my baby. It has been a rough week. I left him tonight falling asleep in the loving arms of his Tech Margarita.

Pictures!!!

He will behave for a moment in the swing while watching Mickey Mouse Club House. Yesterday was the first time he didn't wake with a startle and then start screaming. He looked around for a moment realized where he STILL is and then starts screaming. I came home last night. I just couldn't do the 2 hours of sleep again and then deal with a very grumpy baby all day. My kids piled in around me when I got home and by morning they were all in bed with us. Neleh tells me she"needs" me that means she wants to be held. But I think all the kids "need" me, and Thom too. I'm going to come home at night until Severin can come home. I feel guilty leaving him, but guilty leaving my other three and Thom. And from what they say he is not going to be any easier when he comes home. It takes a few weeks for the pressures to equal out. This is why he is so grumpy. He has to be sitting up all the time. I can't even imagine the head ache he feels. It is instant crying when he is due for more tylenol. I cursed us by saying he would be home on Monday, so I am not going to say the"H" word until I have him in the car and on my way. But I will say he needs 7 days of antibiotics and they started on Sunday. You can do the math.
LOVES!!!

Wow my 100th post I wish I could say we were going home. Severin is responding to the antibiotics. Now we just wait for the bug to be really gone. My thanks to all of you who are filling in for me with my family while I'm away.

The possible bug

I'm on the computer at PCMC while Severin is being held by his nurse. I thought I should give a bit of an update. Severin has an infection in his blood. They are calling it a staph infection. I guess there are varing degrees so we will wait until more "bugs" grow in the dish, and make sure he is on the right antibiotic. He will be here for 4-7 more days, depending on the antibiotic time needed. This has to be treated with IV antibiotics. He is running out of veins. I could do IV treatments at home BUT hat would require a central line (PICC line). It would go into his heart right where they just did surgery. I'm not willing to risk it. He may end up with IVs in his head before we are through here. He is not back in CICU though yeah! Well I had better eat that is what his nurse told me to do.

Monday, November 29, 2010

Severin is still running a temp. 99.8. They are adding an antifungal to his other two broad spectrum antibiotics. His inflamation is increasing, but the cultures are not growing anything. Still no idea what is going on inside. He is eating, pooping, peeing. He probably should do more, but its ok. His vitals are stable other than the fever. Great! Annie just said he was gram positive. Now we are hot on the trail of this bug! Now it is a process of elimination. I'll update when I can.

Thom stayed and Severins fever is 100.2

I am so glad Thom stayed. It has not stopped snowing. And it's great to have some one to trade off with. Severin wants to be held nonstop. I would too if I felt like he does. He needs to stop holding his breath, it doesn't look good on the monitors. We will fake sleep tonight.
Thom keeps him entertained with the mobile. That only lasted 10 mins. We just try to keep him comfortable.

We are here and...

We made it through the snow storm. Severin is still running a fever of 102ish. None of the cultures have revealed what is causing the fever. He has had three doses of antibiotic. I don't know what the defining point is when they send him back to ICU. I can feel the rattle in his chest when I hold him. I'm trying to do percussions (patting on his back) to break up any mucus. He needs to poop, he has had a suppository. He just farted so I think it is on its way. Stinky! We are wearing masks tp protect us from him and him from us. Because we do not know what is going on in side of him. Thom is going to try to get to the kids.
This is how we left him last night. I decided to come home with Thom. Do some laundry, shave my legs, sleep in MY bed. Severin is still a little drugie.
When I called to check in this morning, things changed. Severin is running a low fever. His lungs are not sounding clear. He is not eating very well. They are checking his blood for infection. I'm waiting to hear back on that. We are packing up again, and heading out into the snow. Say a little prayer for our Boy.

I know I'm late, but I have pictures!!!

We were able to hold him this afternoon. He is still pretty loopy as you can see in the picture. He has had a lot of sedation today. Echo, blood pressure too high ect. so because of that he is not eating very good and no poops yet. He really needs to eat his usual amount and POOP. I really do not want to go back to a feeding tube. Hopefully he is just tired. His pain seems to be better controlled once they decided morphine did nothing but make him itch. Poor baby I thought he was going to rub his face off. When they removed his RA line (the one in his heart) he bled a bit, so they left the chest tube in. He should be able to go to the floor tomorrow. Thats the last leg of this hospital journey. We were leaving and to my suprize in the lobby was Ken and Kamie Harris! I had talked to her yesterday and I thought she was still in CA! It was sooo good to see her and visit for a bit. I'd like to believe she came all the way from CA to see me but I know it was for Thanksgiving. The joy of good friends. Thank you for your love and prayers they have been floating us along!

A very GRUMPY Baby

Severin is doing as good as can be expected. I decided I would go with Thom and sleep at the RMH, and not in the hospital. Severin is really grumpy. They are trying to find the balance of sedation and pain med management. He cries but without a voice. He flails his arms and legs. He was able to come off the vent. at 7:30 so at 11:00 we tried to give him some pedialite. I think it hurt his throat. Then he cries and that hurts his chest, and around he goes in a vicious cycle. He just wants all the junk out/off of him, and be held. The Glen procedure replumbs the pulmonary artery blood flow. Now the blood comes from his head and into his lungs. Changing these pressures, through surgery, causes headache, and discomfort. It will take his body a few days to balance it all out. The amazing thing is that the body CAN and someone figured it out so now my son can live! His nurse said tomorrow will be a better day, and I hope it is.

Talk with Dr. Kaza

Just as I was making that last post, Dr. Kaza walked in. He is very confident in the surgery. Severin is an otherwise healthy baby. He's fat, and that is a good thing. He should recover quickly. We can go and see him soon.

Surgery day!!!

The hand off to the Anesthesiologist. Severin had fallen asleep, he opened his eyes just long enough for me to give him kisses. It was alittle different this time. He didn't have any IVs. He will have so much going on when I see him again. They took him back at about 8:15 am. By 10:45 they were able to start the procedure. By 1:15 it was complete. Now we wait for him to come off the bypass, and stabilize. We will talk to Dr. Kaza about the procedure and then wait 20 mins or so before we can go to the CICU and see him. He will probably still be on the ventillator. No holding because he will still have lines going into his heart. Hopefully he will be able to eat by tomorrow-A Thanksgiving Feast! The lines and drains should come out soon. Daddy, Mommy and Severin just waiting our turn...

we are here

We beat the storm and are now at the Ronald McDonald house. My new home away from home. The kids are safe, the dog is at Grams, the fish have a feeder, the birds have a full dish. I think that is everything. Severin is scheduled for 8am. Even if Dr. Kaza has to snowshoe in. That might be true....

Heart Cath 11/22

Heart cath took half the time as expected. Severin was a very good baby. There is a slight change in the surgery on Wednesday. Severin has a narrowing in his left pulmonary artery. (not where the shunt is) This will be repaired with a patch like his coarch was. The hope is, when the body heals in this area then it will not constrict again. They will remove his BT shunt and replace it with the Glen procedure. His aorta also has a twist in it that they will monitor. Just proving once more that Severin IS a unique snowflake. We are home for tonight. I came home to dinner and my kids well taken care of. Thanks #1!

Testimony in song

I went to a nephews baptism today. The opening song was the Hymn " I Know My Redeemer Lives" I made it until the 5th verse. "He lives to silence all my fears, He lives to wipe away my tears, He lives to calm my troubled heart, He lives all blessing to impart." I was sobbing. I have so much fear right now, I cry everyday, Oh how my heart is troubled for my sons troubled heart, and yet I ask for His blessing. I know My Savior knows how I feel right now. He knows my concerns. He knows my pure intent. He knows my deep love for my son. He lives, therefore I live, and my son will live. This is a very hard time for me to be vulnerable. I'm usually the giver, it is humbling to me to receive. This is a very "growing" time for me. To excercise Hope is to exercise Faith. I am begining a week of more growth. I ask for all of our faith to unite for Severin. Give our family the strength to endure this growing season. My Thanks to you.

Weight Check 11/18

When the nurse (Heidi) came to weigh him, I changed his bum, gave him a kiss and said "14 Sevie, 14" and laid him down on the scale, and crossed my fingers. Heidi started laughing "14.00" He is right on 14 pounds! Oh he is such a good boy!

Weight check and yummy rice cereal

5oz. weight gain! 13.8 ! I don't know if he will reach my goal of 15 pounds by surgery, but we're still working on it.
Severin tried rice cereal tonight, we waited for Daddy to get home. He didn't think anything of it. He even opened his mouth for the spoon. I know it feels like I'm rushing him to grow up, I'm not. I just want him to be familiar with a different texture and taste before surgery. Being intubated can cause all sorts of oral aversions. I didn't want to introduce foods after all the post traumatic stress of surgery. He has a little on his lip, don't worry he worked until he got it in.
I hope he likes it this much tomorrow.

Surgery Date

I heard back from the Surgeon today. Severin is on the schedule for Wednesday November 24. Looks like Thom and the kids get Thanksgiving at Chuck-A-Rama or Rainbow Cafe. Hopefully the kids' school schedule won't be messed up for long. The expected hospital stay is 1-2 weeks this time around.

Quist Halloween

Johnathen as Batman (again) He was so funny he had three different costumes to choose from and he just couldn't decide. He missed trunk-or-treat because he took so long, throwing a fit. He realized he was setting a mood for the littler ones so he put on his happy face for the picture.
Neleh the Butterfly. She loved her costume and told everyone what she was. The best part is she is wearing Halloween pjs underneath that glowed! She would not smile or hold still for a picture. This was as good as I could get. What a grump! She cheered up after she figured out there was candy involved.
Severin as a Tiger. He followed the example of his older Brother and Sister and grouched out. Everytime I tried to take a picture he would turn his head. So I held his head and this ticked him off. My mom made this costume for my oldest sister over 40 years ago. Every child or grandchild that could fit in it at Halloween got to wear it. This year Severin had the honors.
If I had a picture of Me and Thom you would see our patience was spent before we ever left the house. Why do kids make having fun so hard? Thom took Johnathen and Neleh around his parents neighborhood and they got plenty of candy.

Weight check and Heart Cath scheduled

Severin weighs 13.3, a 3 oz gain. I want him to be 15 pounds by surgery time.
It has been two weeks since Dr. Su did the orders for Severin to have a Cardiac Catheterization (heart cath) The Cath Lab had not called me, so I called them. The soonest they can fit him in is the 22nd - there goes my hope of having his surgery on the 19th. Dr. Kaza (Severins surgeon) is out of town until Monday. Then I should be able to schedule a surgery date. I was able to plan and prepare for his first surgery. I just want to have a plan for this one too.

A cryin' shame

It's a shame hair this good is on a boy. Auntie Leesa came over and the pigtails just happened. Everytime I had the camera out to get a picture he would fuss. He must know we will use it for future blackmail. Oh he is so fun

No more OT! 10/27

Severin has been officially discharged for Occupational Therapy. He weighs 12.12. She thinks his development, muscle tone, weight gain, and feeding is all up to speed. We will miss Shauna but if he needs any OT after the next surgery she will come back.

Whew Hoo its not measles!

So when I got to Primaries yesterday Severin had a red dot rash on his face. I thought it must have been too hot for him in the car. It didn't get worse throughout the transfusion. Five Cardiologists and four Nurses looked at it, no one was too concerned. He still had it this morning and it looked like it was getting worse. When I Googled measles it said eye infection was a symptom - Severins right eye has been runny and a little gooey for a week. CRAP measles !? I called the Ped. and took him in. Its his reaction to a virus. He will probably always break out in hives when he has a virus. It doesn't seem to be bothering him but he is getting Benedryl. I do not feel like I can assume anything is "normal" with this kid. Oh and the Peds scale said he was 12.6 so I think it is safe to say he is over 12 pounds.

Another blood transfusion

My day started with a call from the Cardiologist at 8:30 am after another very UNrestful night sleep- Severin can not maintain his O2 sats if I paid him to. Dr. Su said Severin need to go to Primaries for another blood transfusion. Let me back up to his cardio appointment yesterday. According to their scale Severin weights 12.3 and is 24 inches long YEAH! He has went to 1 liter of oxygen as of Saturday, and even with that his sats were only 77%. Dr. Su wanted to know why. So Severin had an echo, this made Thom really upset because he wants to see his heart and this is the second one he has missed. He has some narrowing in his Pulmonary Artery where his BT Shunt connects so it is probably scar tissue- totally norrmal and not a big deal because after his next surgery it won't even matter, the BT Shunt will be removed and the PA will be replumbed. Which by the way his tentive surgery date is the end of November. We go back to the "thinking chair" maybe it is his red blood cells. Maybe they have not completely recovered from the circumcision blood loss. It has been six weeks since then. The red blood cells are the trucks that carry the oxygenated blood around the body, so an increased oxygen need can mean the trucks are down in numbers. We decided to do a CBC blood draw. That brings me back to today. Severins hematocrit (red blood cells) was 35 it was 40 six weeks ago when we left after his 2 transfusions. Thankfully he only needed one unit, and we were able to go to the R.T.U (Rapid Treatment Unit) and now we are back home. Now his count is 51 which is plenty high enough. Now he just has post traumatic stress to deal with. It is still a wonder where the red blood cells ran off to. Hopefully he will start making his own now. The CBC did prove he is working it is just not fast enough. The goal is to get him off oxygen before his next surgery date. Well I must go and pretend to sleep before my night job starts in an hour. Remind me later why I love being a Mom....

Just chillaxin for the echo

Severin was cracking me up. He is laying on a rolled up towel under his shoulders. They needed to get an angled view from the top. He just sucked on his bink, and fell asleep. Who says he needs sedation for his echo.

Chubbies!!!

Oh I love his chubby belly and thighs! I could just eat him up!

Severins "Going Home Outfit"

We did family pictures today. Severin was crying while I was getting him dressed. The thought came to me, when I bought this outfit I said it would be his going home outfit. I would take him home from the hospital in it ( I thought he would be there a long time) or he would wear it when he went home to our Heavenly Father. This is the only item I would allow myself to have for him before he was born. I am overjoyed to dress my screaming son in his head-to-toe OshKosh. He is such a gift to us. The faith of so many gave us this time with him. Thank you to all of you!

Grandma Sue and Grandpa Fred Mt. Pleasant Oct. 13-15

I was soo excited to get to go to my parents house. It was fall break for the kids and I needed a break from home life. We loaded the van. Severin has an oxygen concentrator now so I didn't need to bring O2 tanks. We were 1/2 way there, on the county line between Utah County and Sanpete County. I saw what I thought was dust in my rear view mirror. I tried to clean the window. Then the "low oil pressure" light came on. Oh crap ! I pulled over and called Thom. The sign said Mt. Pleasant 18 miles-so close but so far. The van was smoking from under the hood. Thom decided he would come and bring us more oil. I decided I would at least look under the hood. Well that would have been good IF I knew how to unlatch the hood. I stood out in front of the van feeling around in vain. A nice young man stopped by and asked if we needed help. He promptly found the release latch and the inside of the hood was sprayed with oil. No oil was on the dip stick either. Yeah I'm not going anywhere. I called my parents and asked them to come and tow us home - Thom was on his way I couldn't get a hold of him. Thom and my parents got there about the same time. It was too dark to tow through the canyon so we loaded the TWO vehicles with all the stuff I packed and the people. We went to Mt. Pleasant and had dinner. Thom had a sleep over with us, and in the morning he and my Dad took the van to the shop. A small fee and the van is back on the road! I'm so thankful we were not hurt and I didn't keep driving and blow the whole engine. I didn't stay in my pjs every day, I was wearing jeans but Severin barfed on me. This is the back porch to the cabin. We were sad to leave.
We wondered who Severin looked the most like. This is a picture of my mom- they look a lot alike, especially the hair.
Grandpa took the kids on many wheelbarrow rides, and they loved every minute. I didn't even see them for two hours! They were outside "helping" my Dad. Every so often I would hear Johnathen say something to my Dad and he would laugh. They were so dirty at the end of the day they left a dirt ring in the tub.
Severin was "taking" to Grandma. It was so relaxing to have my parents helping with the kids. Severin was always held and the other kids were always entertained.

The things we do to our kids

I picked up this hat before he was even born. I put it on him and took him outside to do some yard work.
The kids were going through the Halloween costumes and trying them on. Severin didn't miss out on the fun.

Weight Check 10/13

Severin gained 5 oz this week. He weighs 11.3! He is a bit of a porkermashelly. He eats 5oz per feeding. Last weeks low weight gain made me nervous, so I called the Cardio. He thought it may have had something to do with the barf fest we had. He also wanted to see how Severin did on 1/2 liter of oxygen (he has been on 3/4). I turned his O2 down and dealt with how he did. It was not good. Every time he fussed even a little he would go blue, and his sats would drop into the 50-60 range. I didn't sleep that night, so after 24 hours we were done "seeing" how he does at 1/2 liter. Sorry Dr. Su you may have your degree in Cardiology, but I have a degree in Mommy, therefore I out rank. So at 3/4 liter we shall stay.

Weight Check 10/7

Severin only gained 2 oz this week. His eating schedule and amount have not changed. If anything he has increased his amount (more around 4oz/feeding). He is awake more often and active. His oxygen need has increased to 3/4 a liter now. That gets him to maintain 77-80% saturations. He is getting so smiley. He wrinkles his nose just before a big grin crosses his mouth. I love it. He thinks I'm really funny, and that boosts my ego. He has a cough now, thank-you Neleh! His OT thinks he looks great. We are practicing rolling, not because I want to grow him up fast, but just so he is progressed as far as possible before round two in surgery land. He will not be able to have tummy time for at least six weeks. Not like he loves it or anything, he'd rather be chest to chest. Thats it for now my friends, duty calls and by duty I mean doo ty. Change the baby, feed the baby, let the baby sleep and REPEAT over and over and over....

weight check

Oh I almost forgot the weight check this week. Severin has gained 6 oz! not as good as the past few weeks but still good for him. He weighs 10.12 and is 23 3/4 inches. He looks like fat man in a little coat in his newborn size pjs. I love his chubbies! He feels sooo good when he lays on my chest to sleep.

SMILES!!!!

The first two are his sneeky smile then I caught the real deal. Thom says his hair looks like Jimmy Neutrons, or possibly Conan O'brian. I think its cute.

On days like this

On days like today when almost everyone is barfing, the mountian of laundry is staring back at me, I wonder what would a pioneer mom do? I have loads of blankets for Neleh to keep barfing in and then another one to keep her warm. I have medicine to make us feel a little bit better. Oh and best of all I have indoor plumbing! Although Neleh thinks it is optional to use. I am thankful that this too shall pass. Thom and Johnathen are not sick yet. Hopefully we can take turns with no give backs.

Sometimes.....

We have been having great "normal" days. Severin has gained 8 oz again this week. This is great because he really prefers nursing, over the high cal. bottle. I figure he could burn through 30 cals. screaming while trying to get a 27 cal bottle in him or I can nurse him and he gets all 20 cals. I do my best to get him to eat 3 bottles in a day. He has discovered his fingers. When he finally gets them to his mouth and starts to suck he gets a disapointed look on his face when there are no milkies. He is being very stingy with his smiles. I will post a picture as soon as I catch one. Sometimes I pretend Severin has a healthy heart. He looks good. He is growing. He makes baby sounds and doing baby things. His eyes are very captivating. The next miracle we look for is a good nap without Neleh screeching, laying on him in his swing or climbing in his bed with him. It is amazing any of us survive siblings! I even over look the oxygen tubes we all trip over, as I carry him around the house. His next surgery is always in the back of my mind.

Growing AND Growing

Severin had his weight checks this week and he has gained 8 oz in a week! The hope was for him to gain 3 oz a week, he has again amazed us all. I started nursing him more at night. I was nervous he wouldn't gain because he was using his calories to nurse. But I guess he is getting all he needs. He weighs in at 10 pounds! Good job Buddy!

no more NG tube!

This morning Severin decided he was done with his NG tube. I went over to get him out of his bed, and his tube was completely out of his nose. I told him that was fine but it means he needs to eat his whole bottle all the time. He has been eating 80cc every 3 hours, that is almost 3 oz. Then he nurses twice at night. Yesterday he preferred nursing, this made me a bit nervous because he still needs a higher calorie. If he chooses nursing over bottle, I'm going to need to be a bit more creative with the calorie intake. He is also smiling today. We haven't been able to get a pict. of it yet- he is pretty shy.

2 month well baby visit Sept. 9

Severin saw Dr. Paxton today. He weighs 9.4 and is 22 1/4 inches long. He had his first round of Immunizations. The benefits out weighed the risks. I was really worried about doing anything routine with Severin he seems to react in an unrountine way. Dr. Paxton is a big advocate for immunizations. I am not against them, I just know Severin is his own kind- of guy who doesn't follow the rules. As of the calender right now we do not see the Cardio. until Oct. 20 and Dr. Paxton until November. Lets hope we can stay Dr. & hospital free for awhile. Oh and he is eating 75cc today and doing fine. If he can do 80cc then the NG tube can be gone this weekend. YEEEEE HAAAAW!!!

Cardiologist Appointment Sept 8

Severin had his first Cardio visit with Dr.Su. From a heart stand point he is doing great. He goes back in a month. His goals for this month is to get rid of the NG tube, which I say yeah to because I was up every hour last night resetting the stupid pump. I hate that thing. He is almost there. He wakes up to nurse while he is on continous feeds. So he eats every 4ish hours through the night. Dr. Su is also very encouraging about nursing. Second goal is to decrease oxygen need. I said this is opposite of what I have been told. Dr. Su wants him to be as "normal" as he can by the next surgery. I still laugh about the word normal. Dr. Su doesn't say normal he said something about physiologically somethin' somethin'. Severin is currently on 1/2 liter of oxygen, I can't see how he is going to go down when he has been going up. If he can not decrease his oxygen need they will look at doing his surgery sooner. He has a bit of a snotty nose right now so I will try when that goes away. All the kids are coughing and snotty nosed, WELCOME FALL!! Pediatrician tomorrow....

Good days are here again!

Today we took a family trip to see my parents at their house. I was a bit worried about Severin handling the altitude. I educated myself and he did great! I was so nice to be out as a family. My parents home is very comforting, and fun for the kids. Yesterday I took Severin to church. To introduce him to the Ward that has been praying so hard for him. I felt impressed to share my testimony about the Plan of Salvation, prayers, Priesthood, and miracles. Being a family forever takes on a stronger meaning when your family includes a heart baby. Severin has endured so much and is expected to do so much more. The power of the priesthood is with me and my family. Prayers are heard. Miracles are granted when they are asked for in faith. And in my case, at times, begged and pleaded for. I say prayers with Severin every night. First I thank his heart for working so hard to keep him here with me, next I thank Heavenly Father for allowing me another day with my son, and then I ask for one more day.

Severins CRAZY Tuesday

After dropping Johnathen off for his first day of school, we had Severins circumcision scheduled at his Pediatricians office. We knew this had its risks; bleeding, infection. We thought we had asked all the questions, to all the Drs. The Cardios said it had to be six weeks post op, and asked us to make sure our Pediatrician was comfortable with the risks. The only answers I could get to why people wait was because the anatomy was not sufficent and they needed to be under general anesthesia. Severin is on asprin, but he is not an easy bleeder-just ask the IV team. Our Dr. was confident the this would be a success. For a moment this would be a "normal" proceedure. We did not take into account that this is Severin and he doesn't do anything "normal". Everything went well, Severin didn't even cry. We waited to check bleeding, and everything looked ok. I ran kids around and it was two hours later that I fed him and changed his diaper. He had soaked his diaper with blood. Yes I did swear, and immediately called the Dr. I went into the after hours clinic our Ped. was not on call. Dr. Valdez said he knows Severin, they talk about how amazing he is all the time. He tried to cauterize but still could not control the bleeding. After one more attempt using a type of material that would form a web for the platelets to collect on and hopefully from a clot, I went home. It had stopped dripping and was now oozing. If it was still bleeding when I got home I was on my way to Primaries. Of course it was, and we were on our way for ER visit # 3. Thom and I were kicking ourselves for putting him through this. It was totally elective and now he has to endure more. At Primaries they had some stuff called surgicell brought in from the OR. It looked like quilt batting, white and fluffy. It has clotting medicine in it and then it dissolves into the skin. It still was not stopping, so they put more on and we wait. They did a heal stick to get a hematocrit- the level of red blood cells. He was at 27. They decided to admit him. They started an IV and did another hematocrit, that time he was a 33. Last time he was in the ER his count was 51. He still needed to get the bleeding to stop and replace what was lost. The Cardios want him to be 40 and above. When we made it to the room on the 4th floor, they took off his diaper and he looked great. I asked what kind of magic elevator they had that could stop bleeding. With the bleeding stopped now he still needed a blood transfusion. After the first transfusion he was still at 33. We seemed to have caught Severin in the perfect storm. He is of the age when his red blood cells are low as it changes from the fetal state. The red blood cells carry the oxygenated blood around, so when your red cells are down the oxygen need increases. When blood is sparce it goes to the major organs to maintain life, skin being the last, so in therory a skin proceedure should have been ok. The asprin makes the platelets disorganize so they can not clot. They think his body had not regulated to give an accurate count, so he was probably lower then 33 before the first transfusion. They kept asking me if he was more pale. I thought he is a white boy he is always pale. After his first transfusion I realized how pale he really was and how pink he had become. After the second transfusion he was doing much better. We stayed the night so they could keep monitoring his O2, & bleeding-which was none, but they did give his asprin again. He started sounding a little snotty nosed. He didn't have a temp. & his lungs sounded good, so we were outta there! I have learned I am not going to say I think I'm at my breaking point, because everytime I do I'm pushed a little farther. The up side is I know I am able to continue to raise to every occasion, but I'd rather not do all this. And we know without a doubt this will never happen to Severin again- you can only be circumcised once. In the ER Severin and I decided we were not going to come back until his next surgery. He smiled so I think he was agreeing with me. As of tonight he is doing great, his normal.

Johnathen starts Kindergarten !!

This is what I wanted to post on Tuesday. My big boy started Kindergarten. He is so handsome! Dad came home to take him to his first day too. Johnathen was so excited he ran in to the school. I was video taping carrying Severin, Thom and Neleh following, I could barely keep up. This is the down side of the 10 year gap between Morgan and Johnathen - he is my first again. He is loving school. No I didn't cry, I got it all out the night before.

Free for a moment...

On Sunday Severin pulled out his NG tube while I was giving him a bath-in the sink. I thought it was probably out too far to just stick back in and he has only been needing it for continous night time feeds, so I let him be free of tapes and tubes for a while. He still needs O2 so that was a bit of a pain to keep in his nose without the stickers. I wanted Thom and the kids to see his face when they got home from church. This pict. is a bit of a mug shot, but hey I captured a rare moment.

Nursing....sort of

On Monday just for kicks I tried to nurse Severin. He looked at me like I was doing so many, many things wrong. So I figured he was just not ready yet. The Nurse on Tuesday said bottle feeding is an opposite tongue action to breast feeding, I thought maybe nursing is further away then I wish. Then this little guy never ceases to amaze me! He has been waking up acting hungry at night. I didn't have a bottle ready for him this morning and he was not wanting to wait. I offered all I had to offer. Severin latched on and nursed for about 5 mins! It was 5am and I wanted to yell in the street! When the OT came today I told her about his accomplishment. She was so excited. We revamped his feeding schedule. He now eats a 65cc bottle 5 times during the day, at night he is on 22cc per hour for 6 hours, and nursing on demand through the night. He has to maintain a certain amount of ounces and calories. The goal is full oral feeds, bottle or nursing, no more continuous feeds so no more NG tube. I want him nursing all the time before his next surgery. For what it is worth -with scale differences in mind- the OT weighed him last Weds. he was 8.1, today he was 8.14! 13 ounces in 9 days! What ever his "real" weight is, he is gaining, and that is GREAT! We will be setting some weight "goals" next week with the Pediatrician. I hope last night wasn't a fluke, and he nurses again tonight.

Severin ate the whole 55cc!!!!

Last night Severin ate a full feed. He did it again one time today. The feeding before I asked him to eat more then an ounce, and then he did! I love it when my kids obey. When he can eat 55cc and not get too tired then we can try nursing. I was so excited I was crying and I called Thom-who was on his way to his sisters in Wyoming- he too was so excited he missed his exit. Oh my sweet boy the joy you can bring us by doing the simple things!

Bottle feedings coming soon

Due to MY adventure last weekend Severin was not able to start his oral feeds. Until today. We went to the Pediatrician, Teresa came to be the pack mule and carry Severins monitors because I can not lift more then 15 pounds. And all his crap is more then that. He weighs 8.2!!! He had his NJ pulled to his tummy, then an Xray to check the position. Tonight I had the Home Health Nurse come and make sure I placed his new NG tube correctly. I did it on the first try and only made Severin purple a little. The new NG tube is smaller and I was able to put it in the other nostril, and tape it to his face better. He is on 18cc continous feed for tonight. This will be the last night I can sleep. Tomorrow he will be on the every 2 hour schedule 'round the clock. He will take 26cc from a bottle, or as much as he can and then NG tube the rest. My Mom and Morgan are taking care of him tonight, so I can sleep and recover my own body the best I can. I had better get to sleep, or my mom will get mad. Does that sound like I'm 8 or what?

Angee update

I know most of you check this blog to see how Severin is doing. Some of you may be wondering "what is Ang doing?" so here is a run down of my week. Monday I had another one of those really bad gas pains. Like the one I had when I was pregnant. I've been having these more the past two weeks, but I'm a gasey gal so it would usually, well, pass. Monday it did not so I made a Dr. appointment on Tuesday. I wanted to make sure I was not contagious, and get a better antiacid. I do not have time for it to be anything else. Labs say I am not contagious-great- but I have "clotting factors" which could be from having a baby or it could be blood clots in my lungs. What the...blood clots? Off to UVRMC for a CT scan. The contrast blew out my vein, ouch! son of a... I had a cute puffy Popeye arm but no blood clots-great. Dr said maybe gall bladder- I do not have time for gall bladder, but we'll see when more labs come back tomorrow. Weds was a PCMC day with Severin a good one at that! Dr. calls when I get home and asks how I am, I said a little pain still but ok. He tells me I am more sick then I think I am. What? Lab work shows pancreatitus and decreased liver function. I need to get my gall bladder out ASAP. Seriously what the H.... This does NOT work with my schedule. I was admitted on Thursday night, for surgery in the morning. Friday was NSP Lagoon day. My kids have had such a crappy summer and they have been looking forward to Lagoon, I was NOT going to let them miss out just because of my stupid gall bladder! I made Thom take them. My parents came to the hospital with me. Severin was left in the very capable hands of his Auntie Teresa. Before surgery I was cracking jokes and chating with everyone, like I do. My Surgeon thought I had already been given a dose of versed, no this is my regular funniness. He was probably glad to get me knocked out. Surgery went well. I had hundreds of stones in my gall bladder- we have a picture- yuck! The pancreas and liver looked good. Afterwards I slept while my parents watched, super boring I'm sure. I came home Friday night. Teresa brought Severin home, it was really sad to come home and not have my babies there. My parents hung out until my neighbor and friend, Megan came over to babysit us. It sucks now Severin and I both need a babysitter. Megan stayed through the night, getting up with Severin and giving me my pain meds on a schedule. What a TRUE friend! Thank you Megan. Thom and the kids have went to do my cleaning gig this morning. I'm feeling pretty good, like I did too many sit-ups. My parents will be here shortly to babysit us again. So many angels and the words "thank you" just do not seem to be enough. Thank-you!!!! And moral of this story -there is no such thing as a constipated fart, it's probably something else. All my Love!

Severin passed his swallow study!!!

We had a height & weight check today. He is 8 pounds and 22 1/2 inches. Yeah! Then we were on to labs, THREE pokes later they had barely enough blood- and this was the IV team again, he is really hard to get to bleed. He was pretty tired from that cry fest so I didn't know how he would be for his swallow study. I put him in the little seat, gave them the bottle nipple we have been practicing with. He started to suck and swallow like a champ! I knew he could do it. He is such an amazing kid. Tomorrow the HH Nurse will pull his NJ tube to the NG tube position. He will do his 18cc per hour continuous feed for 24 hours. Day two we can start the oral feeds 26cc every two hours anything he can't get in through his mouth he can eat through his tube. Day three he increases to 55cc every three hours. WHOO HOO This is more work but he is becoming "normal" and closer to nursing. Now he is going to feel hungry and barf. Oh his infection was a stitch abscess. He is still on the antibiotics, but it's looking good.

Oxygen chasin' -it's a heart baby thing

Severin has been oxygen dependent since our Saturday adventure. The NP isn't sure if the infection has anything to do with it or if it is just getting to that time. I am constantly adjusting his oxygen. Higher when he fusses lower when he calms down. Yeah not a lot of sleep here. He has been more fussy, but I think he is just ticked about people hurting him. No fever, maybe it has something to do with the spinal fluid, but I don't think its the infection. He is on antibiotics, and his incision is less red, and when your kid is light grey, red is really noticeable. He will see the NP and Surgeon on Weds. before his swallow study. Wish us luck on Weds.

ER Again

So Severin had another ER adventure yesterday. Thankfully these have not been critical. Thom and Morgan noticed his incision looked infected when they were getting him ready for the day. I called the on call Cardio and of course they do not mess around with these heart kids and wanted to see him in the ER ASAP. The complication with infection in a little one is that they can't fight as well so it is common for infection to spread. They needed lab work, IV team came to do the draw-Severins veins only like the IV team. After 5 pokes, one IV started, one blown out vein in his hand, lots of "digging" and no blood for labs, they paused. Severin was hysterical. By this point Severins O2 sats were in the 50s, he was very blue and I was pissed to put it lightly. I picked him up and told them they can wait for a bit. I have come to grips with Severin being in pain for the greater good, but just plain old dumb ass I can't handle. I didn't know if I would be able to reconize when Severin was "bluer" then usual but after yesterday I know exactly what he looks like when he isn't getting blood flow. I know the IV team was just doing their job, but their job includes a person that they need to monitor. That was too scary. I did take them up on their food offer this time because I hadn't ate since breakfast and I was going to eat my arm off. I graciously accepted and scarfed down a PB&J uncrustables, milk, cheese&crackers, and 2 apple juice cups-did I mention I was hungry? On the final poke they were able to get enough blood for a CBC-to check his white blood cell count. They called the on call Cardiothorastic Surgeon to re open his incision and do a culture in the infected area. Protocall when an infant is in with an infection and they start antibotics, they also have to check urine and spinal fluid for infection. I will let you figure out what Severin had to endure next through those proceedures. He is a brave little boy. Due to all the trauma he is now back on oxygen all the time- he seems to be doing better and might be able to come back off soon. He came home on antibiotics. He peed on his clothes so he did get a fancy new onsie to come home in. I told the Charge Nurse that Primaries and Walmart have the same time vortex, where you leave hours later and spend an excessive amount of money, and have no idea what you have been doing the whole time. Eight hours in the ER, I did get to see Shark week on Discovery channel- twice. On the way home I saw a shooting star, I made the wish that Severin will live to be an old man. I hope this to be true. Lots of loves!

Surgical Follow up Aug. 4

The follow up helped to mellow me out. They answered all my questions. Bonnie the NP said to unplug him from the pulse oximeter, it would make me crazy to watch-and it was. She said carry him around the house like a normal baby. She wanted me to get confident in looking at Severin, not confident in a machine. I can use the machine to validate what I see or at times I'm not looking at him (like at night). The Cardiologist said it was ok for him to desat for 30 mins, before we need to rush putting oxygen on him. He only needs oxygen when he freaks out. Severin will out grow his shunt, and when he does he will continue to become more blue. It is a process, not immediate. She said I will know- I hope I will know. We had to get lab work done. Severin promptly turned purple and held his breath- freaking the lab folks out, they called the IV team, and I waited an hour for them. When they poked him he wrinkled his nose, and then fell asleep while they worked to get enough blood. He is such a manipulator already- I think he likes the pretty Nurses. When the Home Health Nurse came today to weigh him he was 7.9, all scales are a little different but hey he is growing. I tried unplugging him today and it was definitely a better day, beep free! He did just fine.

Morgan snuggles

When I was posting the kids holding Severin, I realized I didn't have a recent one of Morgan. That is because she is ALWAYS holding him. Morgan has been a Super Hero the past few weeks. She helps out so much with Johnathen and Neleh, and she is great at holding Severin. What a great BIG sister! I hope this is all she waited ten years for.
